A satirical FPS experience

GO TO HELL or Die Trying is an action game from Lucid Fer, which puts you in the middle of a satirical yet straightforward premise about solving overpopulation in hell. As millions of souls enter the cursed place daily, it grows closer to overpopulation. You play as the chosen sinner, tasked with going through the Nine Circles of Hell and eliminating the excess population in each.

As a fun first-person shooter, GO TO HELL or Die Trying features heavily stylized pixel art graphics and a good soundtrack. It has a similar look and feel to Project Warlock.

Cleaning hell in retro style

The main element of GO TO HELL or Die Trying is a satirical approach to the overpopulation problem, which exists in real life. Unethical as it sounds, some people argue that the straightforward way to solve overpopulation is to remove people. This game extends this premise and sets it in hell to work around ethical restrictions. Aside from the weird concept, it also features copious amounts of dark humor.

As a game, this is a retro FPS game in the vein of Quake or Doom. Instead of dated-looking pixel art, it uses high-resolution textures and vibrant colors, emphasizing the supposed pixels. It is also accompanied by a great soundtrack, which completes the appeal of each of the Nine Circles of Hell. With a gentle difficulty progression, this is a complete retro experience.

Still, some aspects of the game may be divisive among fans. For one, while it contains retro gaming elements, it contains mature elements in its concepts and story. Also, some references are so niched that they will go over peoples’ heads. However, it is definitely a great satirical video game for the right audience, and the same can be said about its use of flat 2D enemies.

An unusual action gaming experience

Overall, GO TO HELL or Die Trying is another impressive title from Lucid Fer, having all the makings of a modern cult classic. It follows modern retro games that recreate pixel art visuals with more vivid colors and higher-resolution textures. While its gameplay can be considered easier than most, the story and the world it builds more than makes up for it.
